The Blue Sky high-speed Internet project now underway in Nipissing Township has made some steady progress over the past four months. As many already know, three tower sites have been planned for Nipissing Township. They are Alsace Road, Commanda, and Nipissing Fire Station #2. Due to increased activity in various construction sectors, the telecommunications area in particular, availability of materials and certain contractors has been somewhat limited, and the impact has been to slow the pace of construction rollout a bit more than was previously planned. Surveyors, soils analysis technicians, and tower fabricators have been particularly busy and this has slowed progress somewhat.

The public consultation process for all three towers was initiated and subsequently concluded over the summer months with Council and Industry Canada granting their approvals. The Alsace tower was first to be approved with Fire Station #2 being last with final concurrence being received about three weeks ago.

Alsace was one of the first sites within the overall Blue Sky II project to be approved. Consequently, work on this particular location started in mid May with survey work and an access road (for construction activities) completed soon after. The foundation for the tower base and guy line anchors was installed over the past few weeks and the steel structural components will be ready for shipment during the week of September 26th. The tower is scheduled to be erected during the first two weeks of October. Fabrication of the equipment shelter is complete and the unit will be delivered to the site soon after the tower structure is completed. Hydro service and rigging of the tower with all the various antennas and related components will also begin in October with the indoor equipment being installed in November.

Due to a few contractual delays and minor issues with the Industry Canada public consultation process, final approvals were not received for the Commanda tower until mid July. Consequently, progress of construction at this site is about two months behind Alsace. However, some preliminary work progressed such as surveying, site clearing, and access road construction. The tower foundations are expected to be installed within the next four to six weeks with the tower being erected soon after that. It is hoped that construction of this tower can be advanced so that it and Alsace will be operational by year-end or soon thereafter.

The final approval for Nipissing Fire Station #2 was received September 1st. Some preliminary work such as soils analysis and foundation design was initiated. The materials for the base will be provisioned soon with the tower structural sections ordered about the same time. Although this site was last to be approved, it very likely that construction can be completed in the same timeframe as the other two towers. The main reason being that the site is already developed with shelter and hydro services readily available. In addition to providing Internet services to the immediate area, this tower will also support an antenna that will significantly improve coverage of the Fire Department’s two-way system.

Residential and business Internet connections continue to be served over existing operational infrastructure with a connection being recently installed at Fire Station #1. Plans are also in place to provide a network link to the Township’s Municipal office on Beatty Street.
