An Update from the Library Board
The Powassan & District Union Public Library is the fortunate recipient of a federal Canada 150 Grant of $100,000 awarded in early 2017.
This is a vote of confidence in the work of the Library and we are determined to make use of this grant in the best way possible.
Given the community space available at 250 Clark (new community hub next door), that can be utilized for Library activities, the Library board has decided not to pursue the building expansion project at this time. Instead, our building will be undergoing numerous renovations to upgrade and make best use of the existing space.
“I am very pleased that the Municipality of Powassan has been able to continue offering many programs at 250 Clark for our community while we are under renovations,” said Marie Rosset, CEO of the Powassan & District Union Public Library.
Library members will see the following changes when the Library re-opens in February 2018:
- Re-shingling the east side of the roof (original installed in 1982)
- Enlarging the entrance to make it fully accessible
- A new circulation desk
- Replacement of windows and flooring (originals installed in 1982)
- Painting of walls (mostly original paint from 1982)
- Addition of an accessible washroom on the main floor
- A modification of one of the downstairs washrooms to make it fully accessible
- Paving of two accessible parking spaces
- Addition of a new ventilation system
- Reorganization of existing space including a larger area for patrons to read, meet with friends and use their electronic devices
An expansion may still be in the future for the Library, however, it will not occur in the immediate future. As we move forward, we will continue to assess community interests and needs in the context of possible space availability at the facilities next door.
2018 Events and Programming
We’re happy to share that Jordan Ruttan is our recently appointed Programming and Communication Coordinator, replacing Kathie Hogan who has moved on to 250 Clark. You may know Jordan from her previous roles here as a library clerk, children’s programmer or computer trainer or maybe even as an Early Childhood Educator with the Near North District School Board.
She is working to build our 2018 events and programs for our newly renovated library. Jordan welcomes any and all ideas for upcoming library events. You can reach out to her with your ideas here.

Access to AboutMyProperty™ Now Available at Public Library
Powassan and District Union Public Library is working with the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), to offer access to AboutMyProperty™ at the library at no charge to property taxpayers, primarily those who do not have high speed Internet access at home.
AboutMyProperty™ is a free, secure, online self-serve application available online at www.mpac.ca. This service grants residential property taxpayers access to detailed assessment information for their property and comparable properties in their neighbourhood.
AboutMyProperty™ provides residential property owners access to:
- detailed information about their own property; and
- information on up to 24 additional residential properties of their choice.
This information can be used to compare an assessment to similar properties in the area and help determine if the assessment is accurate. Property taxpayers may also choose to file a Request for Reconsideration through AboutMyProperty™.
Property owners will need their AboutMyProperty™ User ID and Password to login. This information can be found on the bottom right hand corner of their Property Assessment Notice.
Contact MPAC at 1 866 296-MPAC (6722) for more information.
